Als er één site op het web is waar de beheerder zijn uiterste best doet om ook maar alles wat voor de Electron is uitgebracht te bundelen dan is het wel https://acornelectron.co.uk, beter bekend als Electron World. Deze website staat al boordevol informatie maar niet alles is te downloaden. Om de complete verzameling te bemachtigen was er in eerste instantie de Electron World DVD, een aanvulling op de website. Echter, in de loop der jaren heeft Dave Edwards (de samensteller van deze site) zo veel materiaal verzameld dat één, twee, nee zelfs tien DVD’s niet meer voldoende zijn. Daarom wordt de collectie nu verkocht op een USB stick van 64GB en die is behoorlijk goed gevuld.
Wat staat er zoal op deze USB?

De evaluatie
Veel software, zoals de games maar ook de ROMs, is bijgesloten op de USB. Je hoeft dus niet nog apart op zoek te gaan naar een download. Het wordt allemaal keurig meegeleverd, voor zover beschikbaar als disk image of UEF bestand.
Boeken en tijdschriften zijn gescand. De boeken zijn gebundeld in zip-bestanden en de tijdschriften zijn direct vanaf de USB stick te lezen. Hierbij vind ik het jammer dat je telkens weer op een afbeelding moet klikken om de pagina te lezen en dan weer terug moet naar het overzicht om op de volgende afbeelding te klikken. Een navigatie met behulp van een vorige/volgende knop was handiger geweest. Dat is eenmalig iets meer werk om een script te schrijven wat de benodigde HTML code aanmaakt en voor de lezer zou het extra gemak zijn.
In de hardware sectie wordt een groot aantal uitbreidingen voor de Electron beschreven. Jammer hierbij is dat de ontwikkelingen tot ca 2007 opgenomen zijn in de lijst, terwijl er juist de laatste jaren toch nog een aantal mooie uitbreidingen gemaakt zijn, zoals de Mega Game Cartridge, diverse remakes van de Pres uitbreidingen, Tube interfaces en niet te vergeten de Electron WiFi print.
Bij de sectie met de ROMs ontbreken toch nog wel wat downloads van de ROMs en ook niet alle afbeeldingen zijn beschikbaar. De ROM-cartridges zijn daarentegen wel compleet.
Het eind-oordeel
De USB is met veel zorg samengesteld, dat merk je aan de enorme hoeveelheid informatie die Dave verzameld heeft. Daar moet echt een enorme hoeveelheid tijd in zitten. Dat er dan zo hier en daar een afbeelding ontbreekt moeten we dan maar voor lief nemen. Dit is echt een verzamelwerk dat je gerust kunt aanschaffen als je oprecht geïnteresseerd bent in alles wat er voor de Electron gemaakt is.
Enkele verbeterpunten die de collectie zouden verbeteren zijn naar mijn mening:
- Betere navigatie door de tijdschriften
- Boeken uitgepakt en eveneens voorzien van navigatie
- Moderne hardware en nieuwe software, opnemen in de collectie
Aangezien de informatie (gedeeltelijk) beschikbaar is op het web en op USB moet het dus wel te doen zijn om de wijzigingen in de vorm van elektronische updates ter download beschikbaar te stellen.
Voor de rest is de USB stick het bedrag van £29,95 echt wel waard. Complimenten aan Dave!
